PRIVATE DAY HOSPITAL FACILITIES

HOSPITALS

There were 326 private Free-standing day hospitals operating in Australia in 2013-14, up from 319 in 2012-13. More than half of the private Free-standing day hospitals were located in New South Wales and Victoria, with those states accounting for 31.3% and 26.4% of all hospitals respectively.

There were 2,977 beds and chairs available in private Free-standing day hospital facilities, up 1.3% from 2012-13 and up 52.9% from 2003-04.

The number of separations in 2013-14 was 1,124,200, an increase of 3.5% compared with 2012-13 and 2.2 times more than 2003-04.

The number of operating theatres increased from 325 in 2012-13 to 351 in 2013-14. In 2003-04, there were 220 operating theatres. The number of procedure rooms increased from 260 to 549 between 2012-13 and 2013-14 - see Explanatory Note 40 for further information on a change in reporting for procedure rooms.

There were 4,243 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff employed in Australian private Free-standing day hospital facilities in 2013-14, an increase of 4.2% from 2012-13, and 108.2% from 2003-04. Over the last decade, the number of full-time equivalent staff per thousand separations has decreased from 4.0 in 2003-04 to 3.8 in 2013-14.

Free-standing day hospitals in Australia received total income of $990.9 million during 2013-14, an increase of 4.7% from 2012-13. Total income is now 2.9 times what it was in 2003-04. Patient revenue accounted for 95.7% of all income generated by Free-standing day hospitals in 2013-14.

Recurrent expenditure for Free-standing day hospitals for the 2013-14 cycle amounted to $815.2 million, an increase of 5.9% from 2012-13, and 2.9 times that of 2003-04.

Labour costs (including on-costs, such as employer contributions to superannuation and payroll tax) represented 41.9% of recurrent expenditure in 2013-14, compared to 41.4% in 2012-13 and 39.2% in 2003-04.

The average expenditure per separation was $725 in 2013-14 compared with $709 in 2012-13 and $558 in 2003-04.

In 2013-14, most private Gastroenterology hospitals were located in Victoria (34) and New South Wales (25) while most private Ophthalmic surgery hospitals were in New South Wales (36) and Queensland (17).

Private Free-standing day hospital facilities classified as Ophthalmic and those classified as Other recorded the highest average number of sessions per theatre (5.1 and 6.0 respectively). Gastroenterology hospitals reported the longest average time per theatre and procedure room per week, at 25.4 hours. Hospitals classified as Other recorded the highest number of beds and chairs (1,144) as well as the highest average number of separations per bed/chair over the year (1961.9).
